Welcome to Northern Homestead!

Welcome page 1

Homesteading is not defined by where someone lives, such as the city or the country, but by the lifestyle choices they make.

From Homegrown and Handmade

Northern Homestead is a blog about a simple life of homesteading in a cold climate. We share how we do things and some interesting information we find along the way.

Our mission

With Northern Homestead we want to be an inspiration to all cold climate homesteaders and winter gardeners. We write about growing year round, preserving, and preparing plant food, from the garden to the table.

About us

Anna is a certified permaculture designer with experience in gardening and sawing, and enjoys cooking, homemaking, and writing. Growing up on homesteads in Central Asia, she learned early how to grow and preserve food and build essential life skills. She lived simply and made the most of what she had. After living in Asia and Europe, she now resides in Canada and relishes the simple life of homesteading.

Jakob is a skilled handyman, electrician, and computer technician, the initial builder at the homestead, and administers the blog.

Growing a greenhouse garden in cold climate is like moving a portion of your garden south. Good soil, location, temperature regulation, water and the right plants, make it a fun growing space.

The urban Northern Homestead is in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada – plant hardiness zone 3A, elevation 1,037 m (3,402 ft); yep, it’s cold here. We turned the home into a homestead, the yard into a garden, the old garage into a food production place.

Allow us to show you around a little

Under Growing, you will find cold climate (Zone 3) gardening tips and ideas. We grow food using organic methods. A Greenhouse is almost a must-have in a northern climate to overcome our biggest foes – cold and frost. We also grow indoors hydroponically all winter long.

Under Raising, we share our experience with keeping backyard chickens and trying our hands at bees. We are currently an animal-free homestead, except for our sweet cat.

Under Preserving, we share how we preserve food. With only about 100 frost-free days, we want to preserve and store our summer bounties as much as we can so we have homegrown food throughout the long winter.

We prefer Recipes from the garden to the table. You will also find old recipes handed down for generations from Ukraine, Asia, and Germany.

Under Building, we share how we build things and use alternative energies. We built a GeoDome greenhouse and turned our old garage into a food production place.

Simplifying your life is a journey: doing things simply and living simply.
