It is early spring here, even though it feels more like a summer day. I do not recall ever planting my first cold weather crop in such warm weather. After a long snowy winter God granted us a beautiful spring. Our grass is green and the trees are getting green too – so nice!
However, I am not early with planting my cool weather crop this year. All winter I have been dealing with a frozen shoulder; it is quite painful and I am sure not as agile as I would like to. So the garden will notice it, too. Things go slower here, and some had to be cancelled. I did not plant an early greenhouse crop and am planning to simplify a few things in the garden, too. My square foot garden will partly be a row garden, and some seeds will wait till there is a better year. But I am thankful to be able to do this much!
For the garden plan it is easy to do with an online garden planer. The smart way to plan your garden!
Or you go the old fashioned pen and paper way. Either way it is good to take some notes just to know what is planted and to have some overview of the garden space.
The planting plan for today, May 9.
Since it is very warm out it also is very dry. It will not be easy to keep the seeds moist. There is a first that I am trying out this time: I covered the seeds with sheep manure instead of adding it to the soil and mixing it in. Not sure if it won’t be overkill, but I hope not. It was very easy to work with, so if it grows well I would be happy to make it a habit.
And here is our very first tulip in the garden! Happy gardening!
Update May 26
Most plants are up and growing. Peas look very healthy and happy. The radish es and arugula has some kind of a bug or disease. I am not sure if it has to do with the manure I planted them in, but not sure. I thought manure burn looks different, any thoughts on it?
Update June 29
Most spinach and radishes have gone to seeds whit out really producing anything. I am thinking it has to do with the manure, since spinach planted differently is fine. So – note to self – do not do it again.
