Do you spend too much money on haircuts or struggle with uneven DIY haircuts at home? You’re not alone. Many people are searching for an easy, cost-effective way to keep their hair looking sharp without leaving their homes. The good news is that you don’t have to be a professional hairstylist for a haircut at home. All you need is the Flowbee haircutting system and a few easy-to-follow instructions.
Please note that we are not affiliated with Flowbee and are sharing our experience. Friends introduced us to the Flowbee many years ago, and the idea of completing a haircut at home sounded too good to be true. But after using it for years, we can attest that it is true and much simpler than you would think.
The Flowbee Haircutting System
The Flowbee is a simple device that can be attached to a vacuum cleaner using a round hose. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner, you can opt for a Flowbee Super Mini-Vac. This innovative haircutting system cuts your hair evenly using recessed blades and trims it with great precision. You get a refreshing vacuum haircut as a result. The attachment allows you to cut hair from 1/2″ to 6″ long in 1/4″ increments. You can find Flowbee on Amazon, and by using it, you can save money and time and have fun!
While other haircutting systems are available, the Flowbee has worked best for us. Both of us have fine hair, with the difference being that I have a lot of it, and Jakob has lost most of his. But we both do best with frequent haircuts to keep our fine hair in style. The Flowbee works excellent for our hair.
Using the Flowbee Haircutting System
Using the Flowbee is super easy. We find that for our hair, it works best if the hair is freshly washed and fully dry. Attach the Flowbee to the vacuum, choose the length of your haircut, and start moving the machine over your head. The vacuum cleaner will suck in the hair, and the Flowbee will cut it.
It can be a DIY haircut or help each other. Either way, it is simple to use. It feels a bit like a soft massage all over the hair. You want to cut only a little at a time. So, if you are going a few inches shorter, cut it in stages. After the Flowbee has cut all the hair, you can trim edges as needed with a trimmer or sharp scissors. The whole procedure with the Flowbee only takes a few minutes, and no haircutting experience is needed.
For me, it works better without the final attachment. So I use the middle parts, and currently, I am on a 3 1/4 inch all-one length cut. Over the years, I have tried different lengths and cuts. It does not have to be all one length.
The Results
We have included a picture comparison of a professional hair salon cut I had a few years ago that cost around $30 and was full of hairstyling products and a recent DIY haircut at home with the Flowbee. The DIY haircut was air-dried, with nothing in it. That is the way I prefer it, with just a natural shampoo and water.
We are not much into fashion. It just has to be practical, look tidy, and preferably free. The DIY haircut at home using the Flowbee works excellently for our needs.
We hope that sharing our DIY haircut experience will be helpful to someone. While this might be an unusual blog article, homesteading is all about doing things at home, and our haircut is one of them.

Considering I went to school full time for a year to become a hairdresser I find your remarks not completely true. Yes you can cut your own hair at home with your primitive ways but not the professional hair cuts you would receive from a hairdresser. We went to school so we could be professionals not fly by nights so I take your comments to be rude and wrong. Because of being a professional I am a people watcher and I can tell a bad hair cut. To save money yes a person could do their own hair but it will never be professional looking. To let you know I know what I am talking about I own my own business and have been a professional hairdresser in excesses of 40+ years continuing my education to keep up with new products and styles. A professional hairdresser takes their career seriously.

I apologize if our article on DIY haircuts caused any offense. It was not our intention to undermine the expertise and importance of professional hairdressers like yourself.
We only wanted to present the DIY approach as a creative and accessible option for those who might want to try it out. This isn’t meant to be a substitute for professional skills but rather an alternative for those who are comfortable with self-styling and are content with the results they achieve.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights.
