The geodesic dome greenhouse has symbolized Northern Homestead for many years. It represents us in a unique way. If you search for Northern Homestead, you will find the dome; it may seem like the focus is solely on the dome, but it represents much more than that.
The Importance of a Greenhouse in Cold Climates
For one, a greenhouse is essential for gardening in a cold climate. It extends the growing season and lets us cultivate plants we otherwise couldn’t grow. So, a greenhouse is a fitting symbol for a northern homestead.
The dome was a perfect choice for us. It met all our needs: it serves as a fantastic greenhouse for growing food, is lightweight, remains stable in our unpredictable climate, and is enjoyable to use. Additionally, the dome greenhouse is very affordable, accommodating any budget, and is DIY-friendly.
A Personal Touch to Building the Dome
However, the dome is more than just a greenhouse. When I first expressed my desire for one, Jakob didnโt settle for something simple or just purchase a pre-made greenhouse. Instead, he went all out and made the greenhouse project his special interestโtrue to his nature being on the autism spectrum. He dedicated significant time and attention to detail to figuring out how to build a geodesic dome. This was long before domes became popular again, and since we werenโt old enough to have experienced the hippie era when they were trendy, he rediscovered the concept and brought it to life. Many dome greenhouses and even businesses around the world got inspiration from this.
Facing a Crossroads
Special interests have an expiration date; they donโt last forever. Once theyโre over, they’re over. The enthusiastic builder has moved on to other pursuits. Even though we still manage the blog together here at the Homestead, itโs just me now.
Iโve started to question whether the Dome is still a suitable greenhouse. I love using it as a greenhouse, and although Iโve made some repairs myself and felt very proud of those efforts, I realize that I need help to keep it operational.
I’ve given this a lot of thought. It’s not just about the greenhouse; as I mentioned earlier, the symbol represents Northern Homestead. In a way, the dome embodies the crossroads I am facing. Where do I go from here? I considered selling it and even posted it for sale. If you are following on Facebook, you would be in the loop.
I even made a little goodbye video; it’s not professional, just real and emotional:
Unexpected Support
A follower expressed interest in buying the geodesic dome greenhouse, and she and her partner came to take it apart. I thought, “That’s it. Ready or not, itโs happening.” However, upon closer inspection, they decided against it. Instead, they took the time to split my firewood. There are very kind people out there, and I felt grateful for the help, but I was also a bit confused about where the dome story would lead next.
Shortly after, I had the opportunity to visit another dome in an area that had been built following our instructions. While speaking with the owners and discussing performance and costs, I felt inspired to keep it, make the necessary repairs, and cover it with new greenhouse plastic. As you may have noticed, I tend to go with the flow when it comes to decisions. I believe life will lead me where Iโm supposed to go; I just have to follow the path.
Exploring New Opportunities
So, I explored my options again. During conversations with a dome builder and a potential buyer, a hands-on workshop idea emerged. Many people would love to see a dome in real life and learn how it’s built. We would start with some theory, then shift to hands-on work, repairing what is needed on the structure before winter. In the spring, we can install the new cover.
Invitation to Join Us
I created a Facebook event, and if you’re local to south-central Alberta and interested, we would love to have you join us! The geodesic dome greenhouse embodies not just a gardening tool, but a story. As I navigate this crossroads, Iโve come to realize the value of connection and collaboration. A hands-on workshop not only helps preserve the dome but also fosters a shared learning experience that can inspire others. I invite all those who are passionate about gardening or simply curious about our journey to join us on October 17. Together, we can repair, renew, and celebrate this symbol of Northern Homestead, ensuring it thrives for years to come.
Thank you for following the geodesic dome greenhouse journey. This post is a bit unusual, as I typically focus on practical aspects and projects at hand rather than personal reflections. However, I wanted to provide a brief update on where I am and my excitement to see where this next chapter leads.
If youโve enjoyed following along, I encourage you to subscribe to the blog for more updates. Your support means so much as I continue this adventure on the homestead!
