Pizza may not be the first thing one would think of making at home. After all, there are pizza places everywhere. However, homemade pizza is just so yummy, and you get a lot more pizza for your buck. Besides, the homemade pizza recipe is easier than you think. My kids’ teenage friends used to call my pizza ‘The Best Pizza in Town’ – yeah!
Homemade Pizza Dough
There are many options for pizza crust: thin, thick, stuffed, gluten-free, and whole-grain. Most often in our home, I use the same proven recipe for dinner rolls or traditional buns, just without the egg. This option is very convenient, as you can make pizza, buns, rolls, or platz at the same time. However, when I make only pizza dough, I prefer olive oil to butter, as it gives the dough a more authentic pizza flavor.

I let my KitchenAid Mixer mix the dough. It makes great dough and is convenient. If your family loves pizza, buns, and co, a kitchen aid is a must-have. It was my first Christmas gift, as soon as we moved to Canada. It’s still working and helping me in the kitchen. Pizza dough, of course, can be made by hand, too. And yes, I go by grams using a Kitchen and Food Scale
because that way it is perfect every time.
With my autistic family, I would keep the toppings very simple. Always ketchup first and cheese last. Yes, I simply use ketchup; it really does make a great pizza sauce ;). Of course, homemade pizza sauce can be used as well.ย

For toppings, my children loved Hawaiian Pizza with ham and pineapple. Plant-based options, such as onions, mushrooms, artichokes, and olives, are also great choices. There are no limits to homemade pizza toppings; just add what you like and what you have on hand. It is all your choice, have some fun with it!

Herbs add flavour to a pizza. To my plant-based pizza, I like to add oregano, thyme, or a homegrown dry herb mixture.ย

For cheese, mozzarella is a classic choice, while Gouda and marble cheese are also great options. Personally, I donโt like plant-based cheese yet. I would either make an exception and have a vegetarian pizza or use cheese sauce, as shown in the picture. In the image above, I used a tortilla as a quick pizza base โa fantastic tip if you’re looking for a quick lunch. Additionally, frozen kale that turns crispy is another excellent tip for a quick pizza.
Now, preheat your oven to 400ยฐF. If you have a Pizza Stone, great, use it. I do not, and I always bake very yummy homemade pizza without a pizza stone. Bake for 18-20 minutes. I like to bake one sheet at a time, even in a convection ovenโit just bakes better. Serve hot and enjoy!
Homemade Pizza Recipe
- For the dough (for 1 standard baking sheet):
- ¼cup (60ml) olive oil
- ½ cup (120ml) boiled water
- ½ cup (120ml) milk (cold from the fridge, homemade oat milk works great also)
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1½ teaspoons instant yeast
- Whisk everything together
- 360 grams = 12.70 ounces of flour. Whole grain or half-half.
- For topping:
- ⅓ cup Ketchup, or pizza sauce
- your choice of toppings,
- 1 cup cheese of your choice
- Some oil to grease the baking sheets.
- Put all the dough ingredients into the KitchenAid Stand Mixer in the sequence they are listed
- Whisk the wet ingredients together, then add the flour
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes,
- Cover the dough and let it rise till it is about double in size. (ca. 1 hour)
- Oil a baking sheet with some olive oil
- Spread the dough evenly on the sheet, stretching it with your fingers
- Let rise till about dabble in high
- Add ketchup or pizza sauce to the pizza and spread it evenly
- Add the toppings of your choice
- Top with the grated cheese of your choice
- Bake for 18-20 minutes at 400ยฐF

Anna, this looks delicious!!! I have yet to use my KitchenAid mixer for pizza dough, but I’m sure it would be easier than making it by hand. I’ve made gluten-free pizza dough several times, and it was not my favorite thing because it was hard to do LOL But I recently got a Ninja, that is supposed to mix dough very well, so I may try this recipe for my hubby in my new Ninja! Unless you deliver ๐
I always use the kitchen aid mixer, it dies the job beautifully for me. But I have not heard of ninja for dough, thanks for sharing.
We like to make homemade pizza too, but we haven’t since I got my Kitchen Aid mixer. We should do it again soon. We use spaghetti sauce for the pizza sauce and like one with just pepperoni and cheer and one with the works.Thanks for sharing how you do it! I will keep in mind that ketchup can be used for sauce if I am out of my normal one. I would have never guessed it.

We love making home made pizza. My husband usually does it with the grand children. I prefer a white sauce like alfredo but my husband is a tried and true pizza sauce man. Your pineapple pizza looks really yummy!
Although we have not made our own pizza dough, there is not good reason not to. We have the dough hook with our Kitchen Aid. I shall put that on our agenda!

I love homemade pizza! We used to make it all the time when our girls were younger and before my husband was diagnoses as gluten intolerant. We would put shredded carrots on ours. It added just a teensy bit of sweetness, and of course, the goodness of veggies that went unnoticed by our daughters. ๐

Hi Anna! I’m hopping over from Let’ Get Real today. Your pizza does look delicious. With a good crust, a hardly care what is on the pizza. I do have to say though that you are the first person I’ve met that uses ketchup for sauce. I bet it tastes great, but I never would have thought to use it. We just made pizzas for our pizza and movie night with the kids. Nothing goes better with the movie Frozen than homemade pizza. At least my kids think that.

I haven’t tried freezing the dough, but I do freeze pizza all the time. Usually I make portion sized pizzas for the freezer, put them in ziploc bags and they are ready to go. Great for take out lunches. Thank you Kim for your kind words. Blessings!
